Who is Irène Diependaal, the host of Hereditas Historiae? *
I am an independent researcher, publicist and editor - with academic training in History, Law and Public Administration - based in The Netherlands. For non-commercial reasons I began, in 1994, initiating projects relating to the research of British and Dutch constitutional monarchy.Today’s newspapers wraps tomorrow’s fish.
I don’t look back at my personal history too much, but sometimes, for several reasons, I keep important old work together and share it with people who want to understand the world we are living in nowadays. This website is reserved for non-commercial projects relating to my research towards constitutional monarchy and aristocracy. A selection of old and new products is to be found. Everything is published in the original language (Dutch or English).
At the same time, Hereditas Historiae is also a platform with a broad scope just like my research and publication activities always have been.
Within a world which is changing in high speed, Hereditas Historiae wants to offer a quiet place to think twice about topic developments related to my personal research subjects and to give tools to reconsider things. The motto of this website - "to foster some historical knowledge necessary to understand our present time" - is part of my personal attitude to life.
Therefore, this website is also dedicated to the preservation and conservation of some remarkable voices of other people. Traditionally, an historian is more or less a collector of facts and "voices". Within an academic essay, an historian draws conclusions after having made up a synthesis of research activities. However, as part of the traditional activities of the historian it is also possible to give an anthology of interesting finds. In that case, it is up to the reader to draw conclusions.

Irène Diependaal (1965) is aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam opgeleid als historicus (doctoraal examen in 1990) en bestuurskundige (doctoraal examen in 1992). Naast haar werkzaamheden als zelfstandig onderzoeker, publiciste en tekstredacteur schrijft zij sinds 1994 over het Britse en Nederlandse koningshuis, onder meer op de opiniepagina’s van NRC Handelsblad en de Volkskrant. Onder druk van de boekenmarkt verzette zij in 1997 haar bakens naar publicaties die geschraagd werden door eigen academisch onderzoek en publiceerde zij bij wetenschappelijke uitgevers op het grensvlak van algemene publicaties en wetenschappelijk publiek: het onderzoek werd volgens academische normen verricht, maar de publicaties waren gericht op het publiek van NRC Handelsblad en de Volkskrant.
Een selectie van deze artikelen - opinieartikelen, academische essays en essay reviews - is te vinden op deze website. Today's newspaper wraps tomorrow's fish: het is een persoonlijke selectie van artikelen die het bewaren waard zijn. Vaak zijn ze - al dan niet met bronvermelding - gebruikt door anderen. In de toelichtingen bij de artikelen is waar relevant belangrijke informatie opgenomen. Er wordt in deze toelichtingen verwezen naar later verschenen werk dat te verouderd is om nog op te nemen op deze website. Het geldt vooral voor publicaties op het terrein van de relatie tussen het Nederlandse koningshuis en de Nederlandse pers. Sinds de publicatie van de bundel Journalistieke cultuur in Nederland (2002), dat verworden is tot een standaardwerk voor journalisten-in-opleiding, heeft Irène Diependaal geen (fundamenteel) onderzoek meer gedaan naar de hedendaagse relaties tussen koningshuis en pers. De "Mediacode Koninklijk Huis" is pas later tot stand gekomen en primair gebaseerd op Europees recht/jurisprudentie. De sectie "A post-truth world" van Hereditas Historiae is daarom met opzet gericht op de internationale, algemene ontwikkelingen en niet op ontwikkelingen binnen het Nederlandse journalistieke landschap.
Op 5 november 2013 promoveerde Irène Diependaal aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De tekst van de oppositie uit de zaal, door jonkheer Maarten Stratenus (achterkleinzoon Maarten Iman Pauw van Wieldrecht) is opgenomen op deze website. Ook de laudatio, zoals uitgesproken door J.C.H. Blom, is opgenomen. Emma - Hoedster van Wilhelmina’s erfenis is de bewerkte handelseditie van het proefschrift.
